BERLIN — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday defended the leaders of Israel and the U.S. for their decisions to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities even as European leaders call for diplomacy to prevent the conflict from intensifying.
“There is no reason for us and also for me personally to criticize what Israel started a week ago and also no reason to criticize what America did last weekend,” Merz said at an industry summit in Berlin on Monday. “It is not without risk," he added. "But leaving it as it was wasn’t an option either."
The U.S. over the weekend struck three Iranian nuclear sites, a dramatic escalation of the conflict that brought Washington directly into Israel’s war with Iran.
