LISBON — Fewer than half of Portugal’s 10.8 million eligible voters cast their ballots in the country’s snap national election as of 4 p.m. on Sunday, the electoral authority reported.
The 48.2 percent participation rate is lower than the 51.9 percent participation rate recorded at the same time on election day in March 2024, when Portugal last held a legislative vote. That election was characterized by a higher-than-average total participation rate, with nearly 60 percent of eligible voters casting their ballot.
Voting has taken place without any major incidents except for one violent episode in central Lisbon. Socialist Party candidate Miguel Coelho, president of the city’s Santa Maria Maior district, reported being pushed to the ground and punched by an elector who urged onlookers to vote for the far-right Chega party. The Portuguese police are investigating the attack on the center-left candidate.
