Giovanni Buttarelli

Giovanni Buttarelli was appointed European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) for a five year term in December 2014 by a joint decision of the European Parliament and the Council. Before joining the EDPS, he was Secretary General for the Italian Data Protection Authority, a position he occupied between 1997 and 2009. A Cassation judge, he has vast experience on data protection and related issues at the national and international levels. Buttarelli has participated in many bodies at the EU level (including Art. 31 Committee of Directive n. 95/46/EC and Taiex programs) and at the Council of Europe (in particular, as a consultant, T‐PD; CJ‐PD, DH‐S‐Ac, Venice Commission). He has also contributed to many hearings, meetings and workshops held by Parliaments and specialized journals and papers. He currently teaches privacy at the Lumsa University in Rome.
